Welcome to my blog! My name is Gabe Diaz and I will be taking you step by step through my journey on creating my 2 minute film opening. I am very excited to be working on this project because I can finally use all the skills and techniques that I have been learning throughout the year. I also know that while doing this film opening, I will learn many valuable things that will help me in my future career.
I am not sure what type of genre I want to do yet, but I do have some ideas on what I want to do with my film opening. A film opening requires many elements in order to convey a proper purpose and be considered “great.” I want my opening to engage the audience, create a mechanism for storytelling, and establishes tone. When you are watching something, it should have a reason to make you want to watch and care about what you are watching. If a piece does not have a “why do I care” element embedded in it, then a viewer has no reason to continue watching. I want my opening to have a clear purpose in order to clearly grab the viewer's attention, and make the audience want to keep watching.
One film opening that inspired me was the opening of Children of Men. The opening starts with a black screen and the credits that are being shown. As the credits are being shown a voiceover is heard saying important information. As the opening goes on the audience learns that the youngest man in the world ,who is 18, has died. A rundown, dirty version of London in the future is shown. We also learn a little about the main character and that he might be an alcoholic because he is putting alcohol in his coffee. The scene ends with an exploding bomb and the title of the movie. I believe this movie opening is perfect because it creates a mechanism for storytelling, establishes the tone, and engages the audience. But most importantly it makes the viewer want to keep watching. I hope I can create something as powerful as this and fit it all in under 2 minutes!
